FSC® and Fairtrade Certified Timber Pilot Project, Curacautin, Chile

Curacautin, Chile was one of the three forest sites in the world dual certified by both FSC® and Fairtrade. This pilot project was to offer a promise to help alleviate poverty through a sustainable income, restore forest rights and improve forest biodiversity. This project has ended but project Fairwood has emerged from this and promises a long-term movement going forward.

FSC and Fairtrade Certified Wood from Curacautin, Chile - pilot project

Curacautin is nestled in Chile's Lake District, a region of breathtaking landscapes, which is ancestral territory for the Mapuche indigenous people. Several decades of unsustainable management together with conventional lumber markets led to the degradation of the natural forests and the biodiversity affecting the livelihoods of the people living in the valley.

Fortunately local native forests are very resilient and despite degradation have naturally regenerated in many areas, showing great potential for the future if well managed.

Today the people of Curacautin have a great opportunity to restore the forest industry and biodiversity in the region based on sound management of secondary forests according to the highest international standards: FSC and Fairtrade.

The CuracautinFSC®/Fairtrade® certified wood pilot project

Started by SSC Wood Technologies in response to the FSC/Fairtrade pilot project, it is seeking better prices for the FSC/Fairtrade certified timber produced under responsible management plans and operations, creating value for the community while conserving and enhancing biodiversity.

Main Benefits for the Producing Communities

The project will ensure that there are high levels of health and safety protection for all it workers as well as proper insurance coverage. All certified products from Curacautin Valley will receive the Fairtrade Premium at a rate 10% of the ex-mill prices of timber. The Fairtrade Premium is additional funds above the purchase price which producers invest in social, economic and or environmental projects. Farmers and workers democratically decide on the use of the Fairtrade Premium according to their needs. We expect this unique pilot program to be replicated at other sites in different regions of the world, if this project is successful, to extend the benefits of the dual-certification to other communities and forests.
