Kahrs Debuts First FSC and Fairtrade Certified Wood, Hardwod Flooring, Paneling from SSC Forestry

Kährs (Nybro, Sweden) debuted the first hardwood floor in the world from dual certified FSC and Fairtrade timber at Almedalsveckan (Politicians Week) at Visby, Gotland at Saint Katarina's Church with SKTF and Fairtrade Sweden sponsoring the event.  Kährs will be offering four FSC and Fairtrade products in its World Collection in 2012 according to Bruce Uhler, the company's environmental ambassador.
Whereas the FSC certification promotes responsible forest management along with social, health and safety requirements, Fairtrade ensures small-scale workers in developing nations are fairly compensated for their products.  Fairtrade ensures small-scale workers in developing nations are properly compensated for their products.  Fairtrade producers are provided access to foreign markets, and their products carry the Fairtrade Premium, extrad funds that producers choose how to invest, either in their communities or their business.
The dual labeling is part of a pilot project between FSC and Fairtrade and is Kährs is sourcing its wood material from Chile's Curacautin Valley.  "We see this as a great corporate responsibility program for the company that will have an impact on millions of people and forest biodiversity," Uhler said and  "We are excited to have a partnership with SSC Forestry of Uppsala, Sweden".  
Fairtrade sees a partnership with FSC as an opportunity to assist the estimated 800 million people who depend on forests every day for their livelihood and sustenance. Fairtrade products today come from Africa, Asia, and Latin America and are sold in more than 70 countries worldwide.  While Fairtrade-certified wood is new other products on the market already today include coffee, chocolate, tea, bananas and cotton.
