Kährs growing fast
12 April 2012
Construction crisis was about to crack the flooring manufacturer Kährs.Hundreds of people had to leave their jobs. Today is a different position and the orders roll in from around the world. The secret is sustainable and certified raw materials.
The floor covering manufacturer Kährs was early with a clear environmental conscience. At the beginning of the 1990s added an environmental manager and began working systematically with environmental issues. Today is here to Nybro as Kährs customers turn to find out more about environmental and sustainability issues.
- Our business customers in touch and want to know how products are made so they can pass it on to their customers. They ask for checks on us. But as tough as we had been questioned over the past few years, we have not been before, says Åke Erlandsson, environmental manager at Kährs.
The detailed reports describe Kährs how manufacturing works. From forest to finished floor. They also describe what they are doing to reduce use of chemicals and energy.
- Often ask clients about specific products, not about how we work with environmental issues. And it feels natural. If you buy a shampoo you ask not what they do with shampoo manufacturer, but what it is in the package, says Åke Erlandsson.
For nearly 20 years, Kährs been certified with a variety of eco-labels. Åke Erlandsson says that it is an effective and credible way to tell customers that the company takes environmental responsibility.
- If every year we talk about what we have done and not done, it creates credibility and provides continuity in what we do. It is not an event or a single brochure, but an ongoing task.
As part of its environmental efforts and to strengthen the profile even further, we added two years ago an environmental ambassador, Bruce Uhler. He is the face and the one who keeps in touch with environmental organizations, clients and colleagues in the forestry and wood industry.
- A few years ago we worried us most of the production and costs. Sure, they made sure production is safe and environmentally correct, but now environmental issues at the center, he says.
Bruce Uhler from Kährs sales organization in the United States. And he knows what customers want.
- In the U.S., the environmental issue is important. It may be hard to believe because we have a lot of waste and drive big cars. But for many architects, builders and interior designer, it is important - everyone is wondering about the product, if the wood raw material and chemicals, he says.
It is not without pride, he says that Kährs is first in the world with a floor consisting of FSC-Fairtrade-certified wood. The wood thus live up to the requirements that are designed to promote fair trade and sustainable forest management.
Organisations Fair Trade and FSC cooperates in a pilot project in Chile where it recreates the forest which once devastated the Curacautindalen. The people of the region is through the trading of timber to get a sustainable job.
- We have just sold the very first floor of this label. We hope to start regular production in the fall. So far, it is small, but hopefully there will be more forest cooperatives. We also hope that the creation of several similar projects in other locations around the world, says Bruce Uhler.
The first floor was sold to the Asian Rural Institute in Japan. Although the Swedish Embassy in Santiago, Chile, has made an order. But even if the design and quality come first, says Bruce Uhler, that Fair Trade makes the product more competitive.
- You do not buy a floor just because it is Fairtrade Labelled. You look first at the design, since the quality and reputation. On the customer level is not the most important environmental issue. But our biggest retailers and construction companies, perhaps the environmental is the first thing they ask about. If I come to an architectural firm in New York or Los Angeles so is the conversation today about how many certification credits within the LEED label they can get with our products. So we must be able to tell you that we can contribute to a certain number of points.
Oak is the most common type of wood Kährs use for flooring. Every year you buy into 50000-75000 cubic meters of oak. This makes them one of the giants in Europe. Again, try to buy locally produced oak. Suppliers must ensure that forestry is sustainable and that each stage of the production chain is controlled.
- We have worked a lot with our buyers to take this up with suppliers at an early stage, says Åke Erlandsson.
But a few years ago was questioned Kährs use of tropical timber from rainforests. And imports were stopped immediately.
- It's not wood species that is the culprit without deforestation. Then we decided that we must invest in having a safe origin. Now we use tropical woods again, but only wood that is FSC certified. We see that there is a problem and we deal with it through certification, says Åke Erlandsson.
Bruce Uhler believes that Kährs conscious work environment and sustainability issues can inspire others to catch on.
- When a company starts to do the right thing, and competitors see that we are successful, they want to copy our work. If we just do the right thing so everything else will take care of itself. We can influence the environment and sustainability issues on a global scale.
A few years ago, it was not Kährs environmental commitment that was in focus. Then it was more about survival. Global competition and a sharp decline in construction market forced the company to shrink the suit.
The owners followed one another. Several hundred employees had to leave their jobs in just a few years. Factories were shut down. Production is concentrated to the "hometown" Nybro in Småland.
It is only now, some years later and with new owners who can dare to see a bright future.
- We have new opportunities now. We have new owners and new leadership. It feels like it has swept into a new energy in recent months. For it has been ten tough years, said Bruce Uhler.
Last year, the orders started rolling in in earnest. Kährs new employee. Investment company Triton became the majority shareholder and hammer through an aggressive investment plan. For five years, 440 million invested in Nybro factory - a record investment in company history. The central warehouse was moved from Kalmar to the production plant in Nybro. Partly to facilitate the logistics, but also to reduce carbon emissions. And last year we opened a new warehouse, which is on a 19 000 square meters. The equivalent of four football fields.
If you look back at Kährs 150-year history, we see that innovation led to environmental benefits, while maintaining the aim of implementation has been to save money.
- Kährs have always tried to work with the sustainability of the effort to use every part of the commodity. 1921 the company began using waste products as fuel to run a ångkraftsmotor.Today we read about companies that use waste products to energy and they are so happy for that, but companies in Småland, especially in the wood industry, has done it for almost a century. Now we use buzz words that say it is durable, but the operation has actually been around a long time, said Bruce Uhler.
